Attic Ventilation: Baffles and Wind Washing
✕ MISSING OR IMPROPERLY INSTALLED BAFFLES
When baffles are missing, damaged, too short, or improperly installed, outside air entering through the soffit can blow directly across or through the insulation. This can disturb or displace insulation and reduce its effectiveness—creating the condition known as wind washing.
✓ CORRECTLY INSTALLED BAFFLES
Attic baffles create a protected pathway for ventilation air, directing outside air from the soffit vents upward along the underside of the roof. This keeps moving air above and away from the insulation, while allowing the attic to ventilate properly. The insulation remains in place and can perform as intended.
Wind Washing Effect
Wind washing happens when outside air blows into the attic and moves across or through the insulation instead of being properly directed above it. Think of insulation like a winter coat—it works by trapping air. When wind is allowed to blow through that insulation, it can dramatically reduce how well it protects your home. Wind washing can also move or disturb loose insulation, leaving areas with little protection. The result can be rooms that are difficult to heat or cool, higher energy bills, drafts, and increased risk of moisture problems. Proper attic baffles and air sealing help keep outside air where it belongs while allowing the insulation to do its job.
On a cold day, it stands to reason the attic space would be colder than the Space under insulation…. But not in a home with poor construction.
